The City Captain's Court was the seat and residence of the city captain, the Lübeck governor, in the town of Mölln until the pledged city was returned to the Dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg following a decision by the Imperial Chamber Court in 1683. The City Captain was directly subordinate to the Lübeck Council and exercised the executive power and minor jurisdiction on their behalf in the area.
The protected building complex was newly constructed around 1550 on behalf of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, which had taken Mölln into its administration as a pledge since 1359. Here, the Lübeck bailiff had his residence and administrative seat in the strategically important city for Lübeck on the Stecknitz Canal and Old Salt Road. Previously, there was the Mölln residence of the Dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg at this site.
