The Gudendorf memorial is intended to commemorate Soviet prisoners of war and forced laborers who perished here in a camp during World War II. The memorial is located within the landscape protection area Klev from Windbergen to St. Michaelisdonn.
Soviet prisoners of war arrived in Schleswig-Holstein in a miserable condition, as they were only inadequately fed. Shortly after the invasion of Nazi Germany into the Soviet Union in 1941, a prisoner camp for Soviet prisoners of war was established in Gudendorf. On an area of around one hectare, barracks were located on the present-day Schulstraße, where the Soviet prisoners of war were housed. The camp belonged to STALAG XA Schleswig. Additionally, barracks were erected along the road to St. Michaelisdonn near Hindorf, intended to serve as a "contagion area." Part of the site also served as a military training camp.
