Halbendorf in the Mountains

Halbendorf/Gebirge, also known as Halbendorf im Gebirge, Sorbian Wbohow, is a locality near Horken in Upper Lusatia, belonging to the city of Schirgiswalde-Kirschau. It is situated in the valley of the Cunewalder Water along the federal road 96, the Old Imperial Road, and has 135 inhabitants.
Halbindorff was first mentioned in 1374 in the Bautzen court record, page 56a. In 1469, the locality was mentioned again in a Bautzen court book. There, a Hannuss Wustenüge from Halbindorff admitted that he had stolen two cows. The surrounding area has been populated for a long time. A stone axe from pre-Christian times and shards of German and Slavic pottery from the 13th century were found. The locality was located on an old trade route from Bautzen via Großpostwitz to Zittau. For a long time, Halbendorf was owned by the Bautzen Cathedral Chapter. Various nobles were enfeoffed with the locality. From around 1600 to 1676, it belonged to the von Rechenberg family. The area was referred to as the "Rechenbergsche Land." In the following period, the owners of the manor changed frequently.
