Sonnenberg is located southeast of Bautzen in the Lusatian Mountains. The settlement lies on the southeast slope of the 384 m high Sonnenberg and the 447.4 m high Mönchswalder Berg in a left-side valley of the Butterwasser.
Sonnenberg originated at the end of the 18th century as an expansion of the estate of Rodewitz. The first of the houses was probably the “Sonnenschenke”, for which Gottlieb Zschecke was granted land by the lordship of Crostau in 1768. Along the valley floor, a small group of houses grew around 1787 as a settlement of farm laborers from the estate of Rodewitz. After the dissolution of the manor, several small farms were established in Sonnenberg after 1846. In the second half of the 20th century, several country houses were built in the woods. In 1955, the volunteer fire department of Rodewitz created a firewater pond in Sonnenberg.
