The Bautzen Nature Park is located in the southeast of the city area of Bautzen. It is not attributable to the work of a landscape designer and is therefore not a park in the true sense.
The park, which should not be confused with the protected area category of nature parks, is topographically an agricultural boundary area characterized by a stream valley forest and was used as a public green space by the population of the eastward growing city starting in 1900. However, the decisive step towards becoming a recreational destination was only taken in 1913 with the construction of the inn and the establishment of the pond, as historical maps indicate. It is likely that the construction of the pond was financed and realized with the help of state regulatory measures for waterways. The flood damages of the Spree in the years 1860 and 1897 may have been the decisive factor.
