The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oberfriedersdorf in Friedersdorf on the Spree, like the two churches in Neusalza-Spremberg, belongs to the Ephorate of Löbau-Zittau of the Evangelical Lutheran State Church of Saxony. Of the three churches in the small Saxon town municipality in the Görlitz district, it is the youngest sacred building.
The present district of Friedersdorf in the town of Neusalza-Spremberg, which was an independent municipality until 2007, developed during the medieval German east colonization as a forest village along the upper Spree and was first mentioned in documents in 1272. Until the end of the 15th century, the village of Friedersdorf belonged to the manor of the noble family von Raußendorf. After that, a territorial division of the elongated village began. In pre-reformation times and even centuries after the Reformation, however, there was no church of its own in the village, which was at that time intermittently divided into Upper, Middle, and Lower Friedersdorf.
