The Ameisenberg is a flat-conical mountain in the northern Zittau Mountains, rising to 575 m above sea level. The Ameisenberg is completely forested. Numerous sandstone formations, especially on the east side and the summit area, such as Bastei, Wilde Mauer, and Robertfelsen, characterize the mountain.
The Ameisenberg rises northward above the village of Oybin at the southwestern edge of the Olbersdorf Basin overlooking the town of the same name. On the steeply sloping eastern side, there is a deep valley cut down to Töpfer. Here run the railway line of the Zittau Narrow Gauge Railway to Oybin and also the road from Olbersdorf to Oybin. The "Teufelsmühle" stop is located in the valley bottom and provides a base for climbing the mountain. On the west side of the mountain runs the old trade route "Alte Leipaer Straße." On this route, at the northwest side of the mountain, is the spring "Hungerbrunnen" with the "Brotstein," a representation of bread that recalls a local legend.
