The Herrnhut God's Acre was established as the cemetery of the Herrnhut Brotherhood starting in 1730 in Herrnhut. In contrast to the baroque cemetery culture, it is characterized by an emphasized simplicity of design. The Brotherhood implemented their ideas of equality before death and rest before resurrection in this design of the God's Acre.
As a model, the God's Acre not only served directly for the communal cemeteries of the daughter congregations of the Herrnhut – while it otherwise had no influence on its contemporary cemetery aesthetics – but was also extensively received and influenced by cemetery reformers at the beginning of the 20th century, thus affecting cemetery aesthetics up to the present day. In its historical development, it resembles the Dessau New Burial Site, which pursued a comparable program, albeit for different motives.
