The village of Schlegel, together with the hamlet of Burkersdorf, forms a district of the town of Zittau in the southeastern Upper Lusatia. The locality has around one thousand inhabitants and is located in the district of Görlitz in the Free State of Saxony. Schlegel is known among other things for the recreational area Schlegler Teiche, the former excursion inn Schlegler Mühle, the Schlegler brass band, and the Oberlausitzer Baumkuchen produced there.
The locality lies in the southeastern part of the district in the valley of the Kemmlitz stream and stretches over a length of about 4.5 kilometers. East of the village runs the federal highway 99 between Hirschfelde and Ostritz. Historically, Schlegel is a forest strip village, but over time it developed into a street village. The most notable elevation in the area of the village is Schlegelberg. To the east and northeast is the Klosterwald, and to the southwest is the Oberwald.
