The Eibsee is located on the eastern outskirts of Chemnitz, southwest of Euba. The lake was formed from a quarry, where stones were extracted from 1912 to 1914 for the construction of the Euba dam. Starting in 1926, the lake was used as a nature park, sunbathing area, and swimming pool. Concurrently, from 1930 onward, the area became a training ground for the German Reichswehr and from 1935 for the Wehrmacht. From 1945 to 1992, the Soviet Army took over this infrastructure for military use.
In 1996, the clearance of the Eibsee began and measures for the removal of contaminated sites were implemented. Among other things, 126 tons of old tires, 80 wrecked cars, 50 refrigerators, and 760 kg of ammunition were recovered.
