Exten lies south of the Weser in the middle of the Rinteln valley widening of the Weser Mountains in the Lower Saxony Uplands. In the south, the eastern Lippe Uplands border on the community.
The nearest major cities are Bremen, Hanover, Kassel and Bielefeld, starting clockwise in the north. The North Sea coast is slightly closer to Exten than the Baltic Sea coast.
