The Harz has one national park, three nature parks, a geopark, a biosphere park and the Green Band. The Harz National Park extends over large parts of the high plateaus of the Harz Mountains. Dense forests, deep and steep valleys and wide plateaus as well as striking mountains and rocks characterize the overwhelming nature of the Harz Mountains.
However, people have not always been very conscientious about the area. It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that a broad programme was launched to restore the forests that had been badly damaged over the centuries as a result of mining and metal foundries. At the time, the fast-growing spruces were chosen, but these are also sensitive to pollution and therefore a lot of damage to the forests had to be observed at the end of the twentieth century. To avoid this in the future, protection measures have now been taken and a more balanced planting policy with a more varied arsenal of tree species
