The battle for HÜRTGENWALD can be summarized as a generic term, under which various fights between American and German units took place from October 1944 to February 1945. The American units had different tactical objectives, by covering the open flanks and securing the Rurstaudam Schwammenauel.
The fighting came to be associated with dubious fame on the American side during and after the war, while the term "Hurtgen forest" remains largely unknown in Germany today. The importance of the battles in the Eifel Forest had less tactical value for the Allied advance. Thus, the Americans experienced the largest defeat of an American division on European soil during the battles in the Kalltal.
