Otto the Great and Editha of Wessex
Editha of Wessex: An English king's daughter becomes German queen, wife of Otto I, the Great, later emperor of the Imperium Romanum (Roman Empire). Otto was the heir to the East Franconian throne at the time of the marriage. Editha became co-ruler. Popularly mistakenly called "Saint Editha", she lived only a short time from 910 to 946.
The Englishwoman on the German throne led a saintly life, was charitable and extremely popular among the people ("Queen of Hearts"). She accompanied her husband through the difficult early years and promoted German-English relations through her marriage.
Editha's grave was considered lost for centuries. Now, at the beginning of 2009, it turned out that her cenotaph (a mock grave) from 1510 in Magdeburg Cathedral most likely contains her bones. In this respect, the mortal remains of perhaps the most powerful German ruling couple were closer to each other for a millennium than everyone thought - under the roof of Magdeburg Cathedral, a few steps away from each other.
