The Schönerlinder Teiche nature reserve is 40.76 hectares in size and is located on the outskirts of Berlin in the Mühlenbeck district of the Oberhavel district. The ponds are about 300 metres away from the Mühlenbeck-Mönchmühle S-Bahn station.
The ponds were created in 1908 as a trickling of Berlin wastewater. Until 1977, the many small ponds in the middle of the sewage fields were partly used for carp breeding and duck keeping. Since then, the ponds have been fallow and left to their own devices.
