Wernsdorf Lock

The Wernsdorf lock forms the lock group of the Wernsdorf canal stage in the federal waterway Spree-Oder-Waterway in the German state of Brandenburg. It is under the jurisdiction of the Berlin Waterways and Shipping Authority.
The first Wernsdorf lock was put into operation in 1891 as a single-chamber lock. It had a usable length of 55 meters and was located at the site of today's south chamber. The construction of the first north chamber took place in 1904. Both lock chambers were equipped with flap gates at the upper gate and with sector gates at the lower gate. To enable larger vessels to pass through the south chamber, the sector gate was replaced by a lift gate in 1929, and the headroom at the upper gate was shortened by 1.40 m. This increased the usable length of the south chamber to 67.5 meters. This refurbishment measure brought significant benefits to navigation at comparatively low costs. Due to the increasing size of ships and a rise in shipping traffic, the north chamber of the lock was refurbished and extended to the east starting in 2004, achieving a usable length of 115 meters. The width is now 9.40 meters. The upper gate, which was shifted east, received a rotating segment gate. The release for traffic in the north chamber took place on November 21, 2006. The south chamber is out of service.
