Senftenberg Concentration Camp was one of the first German concentration camps of the Nazi era.
On the initiative of the city of Senftenberg and with the support of the local SA Sturmbann, it was erected at the beginning of June 1933 in the gymnasium of the primary school I. After a wave of arrests on 24 and 25 June, more than 265 people were in the camp. The prisoners were mainly communists, Social Democrats and trade union leaders from Senftenberg and the surrounding area. After the dissolution in mid-August 1933, most of the prisoners were released. The other prisoners were still being held at Senftenberg police prison. Due to the poor conditions of detention, Marianne Seidel, pregnant and president of the SPD parliamentary group in the district council of Calau, fell so seriously ill that she died on 10 July 1933 in the hospital in Senftenberg.
