The Alpine Gallery in Kempten was until October 5, 2015, a branch museum of the Bavarian National Museum and was housed together with the Alpine Museum in the former horse barn of the Kempten prince abbots. The establishment of the two museums was done by the Bavarian National Museum, which also provided the majority of the paintings and sculptures displayed in the Alpine Gallery. Some works were on loan from the city of Kempten, which was also responsible for the museum's ongoing operations.
In 1991, the Alpine Museum and the Alpine Gallery were established in the former horse barn built in 1730 for the Kempten prince abbots. The Alpine Gallery was located on the ground floor in the former stables in two rooms.
