The nature reserve with the designation NSG 0124 covers 59.14 hectares. It is fully part of the FFH area "Müchelholz, Müchelner Kalktäler and Hirschgrund near Branderoda" and is surrounded by the landscape conservation area "Müchelner Kalktäler". The area has been under protection since May 1, 1961. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Saalekreis.
The nature reserve, which consists of three sections, is located west of Mücheln in the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland nature park. It protects a part of a residual occurrence of the potential naturally occurring oak-hornbeam forest with very well-developed forest fringes. In the northwest, the also forested slope area to Hesseltal, which is occupied by a hazel-root oak-hornbeam forest, and the valley itself are included in the protected area. The two sections of the nature reserve located in the southeast together form a total reserve of 6.98 hectares.
