The Sandhausen Dunes are two nature reserves covering a total area of about 37 hectares in the municipality of Sandhausen in the Rhein-Neckar district: the NSG Sandhausen Dunes Pferdstrieb and the NSG Sandhausen Dune, Pflege Schönau-Galgenbuckel. They are inland dunes, commonly found in the northern Upper Rhine plain. They are characterized by a flora and fauna that are rarely found in Germany: specifically adapted plants and animals to heat, water scarcity, and nutrient deficiency, which are more commonly found in the steppes of Eastern Europe or in the Mediterranean region. This includes the mountain stonecrop, the rare and therefore protected sand silverweed found throughout Europe, and insects such as the wasp or the euphorbia hawk-moth.
