The Ballenhaus Schongau was built as a Schranne for the storage of goods and above it there used to be rooms of the city administration of Schongau. A characteristic feature of the free-standing building are the stepped gables on the north and south sides. It is located between Marienplatz and Lindenplatz.
In 1405, Bavarian dukes granted the city permission to sell goods to foreign merchants, and from 1407 they granted a city scale. In order to be able to store the goods of the trade flows here, this building was built in 1420. The camp fees were an important source of income for the city. After the town fire of 22 May 1493, the building was rebuilt until 1515. After it was already in decay, a third of the building was demolished between 1858 and 1860.
