Maineck Castle

Maineck Castle is an estate in the district of Maineck in Altenkunstadt. It is located at 465 m above sea level on the northern edge of the village, directly on the Main River. Not much of the former castle has survived; the core of the site is the canon's administrative building. As early as the year 1333, the castle, which over the centuries gradually resembled a small palace due to numerous renovations, was the official seat of the canons of the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg. As a protected historical monument, the administrative building is listed by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments under the monument number D-4-78-111-53. Due to archaeological findings in the area of the administrative building, which are connected to the medieval core of the structure, the site as a whole also represents a ground monument with the number D-4-5833-0143. Since 2008, parts of the site have housed a café with a beer garden.
The castle name Maineck consists of the suffix -eck combined with the defining prefix Main. Names of this system were particularly common in the first half of the 12th century. The present-day locality of Maineck only received its name from the castle and was previously called Neunkirchen.
