The JVA Weiterstadt was opened in 1997. After a twelve-year construction period, the first inmates could be transferred from the Frankfurt-Preungesheim correctional facility. The long construction period was due to the fact that the JVA Weiterstadt was almost completely destroyed on March 27, 1993, by a bombing carried out by the Red Army Faction, ahead of the planned opening. The damage was estimated at eighty to ninety million DM.
