The Odenwald sandstone, also known as Odenwald colored sandstone, is the main rock of the Buntsandstein-Odenwald in Hesse. It is a weakly to pale red sandstone of the Lower Buntsandstein.
The eastern and southeastern area of the Odenwald consists mainly of sand, silt, and claystones that were deposited around 250 million years ago in the Lower Buntsandstein in a river and lake landscape. At that time, a dry climate with large river systems prevailed, which transported rock debris but also dried up repeatedly. This created a sedimentation basin where sand was deposited and over time compacted and cemented into sandstone.
