Neustrelitz Castle Park

Description

The Neustrelitz Palace Park, also known as Neustrelitz Castle Garden, was created in 1731/1732 by Julius Löwe after the completion of the residence palace of the city of Neustrelitz, founded in 1733, as a baroque garden, but was extensively redesigned multiple times in the 19th and 20th centuries and expanded into a multi-part park complex. The preserved baroque sight axis, the “English garden” designed in the style of English landscape gardens, the Luisen Temple built on a hill there in memory of the Prussian Queen Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the Hebetempel designed by Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, a series of copies of ancient and neoclassical sculptures, as well as the Neustrelitz Orangery located on the eastern edge of the park, still testify today to the artistic taste of the nobility during the era of Classicism. With the help of EU funds, the historic garden complex was comprehensively restored between 2011 and 2015, and numerous buildings and artistic sculptures were renovated. The renovation of the baroque central axis is still pending.
The palace park was, as was customary in the baroque style period, oriented towards the palace. This stood on a slope descending towards the nearby Zierker Lake. Three terraces in front of the palace emphasized the slope and highlighted the palace. The terrace stairs were removed in 1802/1803. For the clearing and leveling work, four to eight prisoners from Strelitz were brought to the construction site daily. Nine residents of Zierke also worked from 1731 to 1735 for a wage of 12 thalers and 34 shillings per year.
