Hamburger Street

The Hamburger Straße is located in the north of the city of Braunschweig and runs between the district of Schwarzer Berg and the Siegfriedviertel. In the south, it begins at the northern part of the inner city ring, at the transition from the western Wendenring to the eastern Rebenring. In the north, it turns into the Gifhorner Straße, crossing the K 2, directly behind which is the Braunschweig Volkswagen plant, located just behind the Eintracht Stadium. It is connected to the Ölper highway junction via the Braunschweig Celler Straße/Hamburger Straße highway exit, which connects the West Tangent with the North Tangent. The stretch between the inner city ring and the highway connection also forms a section of the federal road B4. To the west of Hamburger Straße, the Oker river flows parallel, along with the Ölpersee.
The Hamburger Straße was already used in the Middle Ages as a trade and military road, leading from Braunschweig to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. As early as 1797, the first "Jewish Cemetery" was established in the area of the street, then still far outside the city limits. On its western side, since 1890, there has been the Schützenplatz, where regular annual fairs like the Braunschweig Masch are held.
