The castle chapel St. Maria Magdalena is a chapel in the Essen district of Bredeney, named after its patron saint, Mary Magdalene. It was built in 1337 from Ruhr sandstone.
Today, the chapel is maintained by the parish community of St. Markus in Essen-Bredeney. It was donated by Theodor von Leythe, consecrated to Saint Magdalena, and is part of the Baldeney Castle, the former residence of a ministerial of the Werden Abbey. Its appearance dates back to a reconstruction in the 16th century, while the interior fittings originate from 1821. The column-supported porch likely also dates from the 19th century. The castle chapel belongs to the parish community of St. Ludgerus. The interior fittings are from the time of the reconsecration in 1821. After the restoration in August 1994, the chapel was reopened for services. On August 16, 2015, it received a new altar piece.
