The Arnsberg Forest Nature Reserve with a size of 2714.0 ha is located around Breitenbruch in the Upper Arnsberg Forest in the urban area of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerland district. It was designated in 1991 by the Arnsberg district government as a nature reserve with the name Breitenbruch-Neuhaus nature reserve and an area of 2,289.1 ha. In 1998, it was redesignated as a nature reserve with an area of 2,289.1 ha by the district council of the Hochsauerland district with the Arnsberg landscape plan. When the Arnsberg landscape plan was redrawn by the district council in 2021, the NSG was again designated with a different name and significantly enlarged.
