Maria Message Church

The current church dates back to a building from the second half of the 12th century. The original church building consisted of a three-nave structure made of ashlar stone, roughly a third of the current length, with a transept and the region's characteristic square crossing tower. In the early 14th century, work began on the construction of the Gothic choir, which was dedicated in the year 1326. Around this time, the two oldest bells of the church were also cast. Originally, the nave and the crossing had a flat ceiling, which was replaced in the 15th century by a late Gothic ribbed vault. It is possible that the vaults of the side aisles were already incorporated during construction, but they could just as well be from a later date. The year 1682 on the former access door to the choir indicates a renovation. Previously, the Michael Chapel stood by the northern transept. After standing in decay for a long time, the chapel was demolished towards the end of the 18th century.
The church was in good condition in 1743, but by the mid-19th century, maintenance was once again lacking. Since the building had also become too small for the growing parish, it was decided to enlarge the building in conjunction with the renovation. It was particularly important to the government that the late Romanesque structure was preserved as much as possible. The nave was extended by nine meters, and a northern tower and a transept-like extension with a large stone outside staircase were added to the southern side. The former western portal disappeared, the white plaster layer on the exterior walls was removed, and the small stair tower with a spiral staircase to the crossing tower was completely renewed.
