Description

The castle of Lösnich in Lösnich was the ancestral seat of the Lösnich noble family, which first appeared in documents in 1226.
The first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1368 with the electoral Cologne fief granted to Knight Heinrich Beyer von Boppard and his wife Lisa von Lösnich. The early documentary mentions of the Lösnich noble family, going back to 1226, suggest that the castle may have existed even before 1368. In 1958, Kurt Böhner speculated in his text volume on the Frankish antiquities of the Trier region that the Lösnich water castle could have replaced a nearby Frankish estate by the river, which, following Frankish customs, was often built in close proximity to water. This is supported by the fact that four Frankish sarcophagi were found in the vicinity of "Weidenrech" around 1900 and a Frankish grave was examined in 1937 during excavations conducted by the Landesmuseum Trier. More detailed descriptions and sketches of the castle can only be found from the late 17th century, when it came into the possession of the barons von Metternich and von Kesselstatt.
