The old Protestant church in Saarbrücken is a church building in the center of the city. The church is a protected monument.
Under pressure from the French King Louis XIV, the Johannes Chapel, which had become Protestant during the Reformation, had to be handed over to the Catholics. The Protestant believers of the then independent town of St. Johann now had to attend services in the Protestant Saarbrücken Castle Church. To ensure that the Protestant community had its own church, Count Karl Ludwig of Nassau-Saarbrücken promoted the construction of a new place of worship. However, the foundation stone for the Protestant church in St. Johann was only laid during the reign of Count Friedrich Ludwig of Nassau-Ottweiler after the sudden death of the Count. The St. Johannes Church was built between 1725 and 1727 according to designs by the architect Jost Bager and received a baroque tower helmet from the Saarbrücken master carpenter Paulus Bucklisch the Elder. In 1753/54, the church building was expanded by adding a sacristy, and in 1775 it was remodeled and received new seating.
