The source of the Humbach is located in a meadow northeast of Ilmenau, directly east of the A 71 exit Ilmenau-East in the district of Bücheloh. Below the town, it forms a valley where the B 87 and the Humbach ponds are situated.
The Humbach ponds are artificial, rectangular ponds primarily used for fish farming.
The 290-meter-long Humbach Valley Bridge spans the valley and is part of the route for the high-speed line Nuremberg–Erfurt.
