Lauter School

The former Lauterschule was House 1 of the Jena-Plan School in Suhl until the school year 2007/2008. The listed building is the oldest existing schoolhouse in the city. It was built around 1907–1909 due to overcrowding of the other schools. Since the school year 2005/2006, Lauterschule had been closed for renovations. However, no renovation work followed. All lower, middle, and upper groups, as well as the 10th grade of the Jenaplan School, moved to Rennsteigstraße 4 in Suhl-Nord.
In March 1905, the magistrate of the city of Suhl requested arms manufacturer Louis Schlegelmilch from Spandau - but born in Suhl - to sell the land on the hill in the district of "In der Lauter" for the construction of a school. In October, Schlegelmilch donated the construction land to the city of Suhl, and in November, the city council decided to build the school. In 1906, the city announced an architectural competition for the planning of the Lauterschule, the first time this had occurred for a public building in Suhl. The first prize of 500 Reichsmark was awarded to architect Rudolf Ludloff from Munich. In the following year, there were disputes between him and the city due to unexpectedly high construction costs. In August 1907, the craftsmanship was put out to tender, with a preference for local craftsmen. The construction work extended from September 1907 to September 1909 and cost 171,000 Reichsmark. The ceremonial inauguration of the school took place on October 2, 1909, by the magistrate of the city of Suhl.
