The Goetheschule Ilmenau is a state gymnasium in the Thuringian university town of Ilmenau. As one of three schools in Thuringia, it also offers specialized classes in mathematics and science and has a boarding school.
On October 12, 1903, the municipal secondary school Ilmenau was founded, which enabled a higher school diploma for the first time in Ilmenau. Initially, it was located in the old school building at Topfmarkt behind the Ilmenau Town Hall. Later locations included the buildings of today's Pestalozzi School and the Ilmenau College. On May 20, 1920, the secondary school was converted into a reform secondary gymnasium, where the Abitur could now also be taken. In 1922, the Goetheschule moved to the current building I in the Ilmenau spa district by the edge of the forest. On October 20 of the same year, the gymnasium was named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He often stayed in Ilmenau during his time in Weimar and played an important role in the culture of the town, which is why the school was named after him.
