It springs from the Gabelsbachkopf on the Herzogröder Wiese. The valley is bordered to the east by the Lindenberg and to the west by the Kickelhahn. In the upper section of the valley lies the Jagdhaus Gabelbach, a forest lodge that served as accommodation for the dukes during hunting, and the Berghotel Gabelbach. The brook winds through the Gabelbachtal. In its lower reaches, it feeds the Ritzebühler ponds and subsequently flows, partly culverted in its last section, through the Ilmenau spa district. After a course of 3.48 kilometers, it flows into the Ilm at the Tannenbrücke in Ilmenau.
There, on the slope of the Lindenberg, are the winter sports facilities of the city of Ilmenau, located in an area with relatively reliable snowfall. In addition to a no longer usable ski jump, an ice stock facility, and the alpine slope with ski lift, the former Ilmenauer bobsleigh track ended here. A little below these facilities, there is a tennis court.
