Seligenstadt Abbey was a Benedictine abbey in Seligenstadt on the Main that existed until 1803. In that year, a secularization took place, in which the abbeys in the region were abolished. The abbey buildings were given to the Landgrave of Hesse.
The history of the abbey begins in 815, when Louis the Pious gave the Frankish settlement of Obermühlheim as a gift to Einhard. The relics of Marcellinus and Peter, stolen from a Roman catacomb, were brought here, and in 830 the construction of the Basilica of Saints Marcellinus and Peter began. Around the same time the abbey was founded, of which Einhard remained abbot until his death. Not long after, the name Seligenstadt came into vogue for Obermühlheim.
