Hildegard of Bingen owes her surname to her most fruitful years in the monastery she founded on the Rupertsberg near Bingen. Here, she wrote two famous visionary, theological, and two medical works and composed her music. She also conducted some of the most extensive correspondence of the Middle Ages, including with Pope Alexander III and Emperor Frederick I. Already at a young age, she had visions that she began to write down later in life. During her lifetime, she led two monasteries and is regarded as one of the greatest women of the German Middle Ages for her pioneering work as a natural scientist, nutritionist and physician, poet, composer, mystic, and theological thinker. Pope Benedict XVI elevated her to a Doctor of the Church in 2012, an honorary title for great theological thinkers and inspirators. With this, Hildegard is the fourth female Doctor of the Church alongside Teresa of Avila, Catherine of Siena, and Teresa of Lisieux.
