As a teenager of 17 years, Felix Wankel (1902-1988) already thought that it would be a lot more efficient to let a four-stroke engine run through its four phases instead of going up and down. At the age of 22 he set up his own workshop in Heidelberg where he could develop his idea, although he was not an engine builder. Later he would develop the Wankel engine.
