Emmerik (Emmerich)

Description

Emmerik (German: Emmerich am Rhein, literally: Emmerik on the Rhine) is a city and municipality on the Rhine in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, located on the right bank (the northern) of the Rhine, about 10 kilometers north of Kleve and about five kilometers south of the Dutch border at 's-Heerenberg. The municipality of Emmerik has 29,571 inhabitants and covers an area of approximately 80 km². The highest point in the municipality is the Eltenberg at 82 m above sea level. Emmerik can be reached by car via the Dutch motorway A12, which leads into the German A3 (Arnhem-Oberhausen) and also via the provincial road from the direction of the Dutch 's-Heerenberg and Doetinchem.

History
In the year 828, Emmerik was mentioned in writing for the first time. Emmerik likely originated around the year 700. Until the mid-13th century, Emmerik developed into a trading place. On May 31, 1233, Count Otto of Zutphen and Gelre received from the relevant authority of the Roman Emperor Frederick II and German King Henry VII (father and son) the status of a royal city of the empire for Emmerich. Between 1307 and 1570, Emmerik was a Hanseatic city. Emmerik belonged to the Duchy of Gelre until 1402. There are still examples of the Old Geldersche architectural style to be found, one of which is the southern façade of the St. Martini Münsterkirche, built in the first half of the 16th century. Until the Congress of Vienna, the current districts of Borghees, Klein-Netterden, Leegmeer, and Speelberg were Dutch territory. In 1816, Prussia acquired these neighborhoods. During World War II, Emmerik was 91% destroyed by a British air raid on October 7, 1944. Between 1949 and July 31, 1963, the current district of Elten was annexed by the Netherlands. Since February 1, 2001, the city has been named Emmerich am Rhein, previously it was Emmerich.
