The Dechen mine was a coal mine in the Heinitz district of the Saarland municipality of Neunkirchen/Saar.
The good production results of the Heinitz mine led in 1853 to considerations of establishing a new extraction site between the Heinitz and König mines. In 1854, the sinking works for the first of these "intermediate shafts" began in the Holzhauter valley, and two years later, the second shaft was started. In 1855, the new shaft location gained independence and was named after the director of the Upper Mining Authority in Bonn, Chief Mining Officer Heinrich von Dechen. In 1856, the mine was connected to the Neunkirchen–Heinitz railway line. The following year, the Dechen III shaft was started. For the first time in the Saar region, a shaft was constructed with iron reinforcement using rings made of double angle iron and T-beams. Sleeping quarters and manager's residences were built, as well as a forge, a miner's house, and an officer's room. Production developed extraordinarily well over time – despite strong water inflows that repeatedly hindered operations on the site. The sought-after coking coal was primarily mined.
