The city library of Regensburg is a municipal library of the city of Regensburg with a focus on educational, informational, and cultural missions. The collection, together with the branches, encompasses about 280,000 media.
The current library was founded in 1904 by the Liberal Association of the City of Regensburg and surrounding areas as a public library. In 1919, it was affiliated with the adult education center. After World War II, it was established in the Old Guard at Neupfarrplatz. In the years 1951 and 1954, branches were opened. After several further relocations in the following years, it is located at its current place, in the Thon-Dittmer-Palais, together with the German-American Institute, and was renamed the German Public Library. In March 1963, Regensburg declared its readiness to fully cover the maintenance costs of the library. Consequently, it was renamed City Library. In the following years, additional branches were gradually opened.
