The Scherfbachtal nature reserve is located in the municipality of Odenthal in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district. It stretches in five individual sections between Odenthal and Klev.
The area extends in the upper reaches of the Scherfbach mainly along the forest-open land border near Klev with several tributaries. In parts it runs in the north through the middle of grassland and in the northeastern lower reaches through the forest in a wider sole valley. In the latter case, an alder forest has been developed in the floodplain along the stream. The grassland in the floodplain and on the lower slopes consists partly of intensive mowing meadows, partly also of flower-rich lean meadows, which have fallen fallow in places. The forest stands on the lower slopes are also formed by species-poor beech forests. The flowing water system of the Scherfbach, which lies northeast of Klev, has a near-natural course and is representative of the Bergisches Land.
