The Dhünnaue nature reserve is located in the municipality of Odenthal in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district. It comprises the course of the Dhünn in four sections on the route from Bergisch Gladbach, district of Hoverhof to the city limits of Wermelskirchen northeast of Altenberg.
The nature reserve includes the alder-ash and softwood alluvial forests, woodland beech forest and English oak-hornbeam forest listed in Annex I of the Habitats Directive. In the Dhünn, there are populations of the species protected under Annex II of the Habitats Directive: river lamprey, brook lamprey and bullhead.
