The former Sophie sanatorium for tuberculosis patients in Munich was a former lung sanatorium near Bad Berka in Thuringia. The idyllic building, located in the forest, was built in 1898 and has been vacant since 1994.
The clinic was established after its founding on October 14, 1898, with the support of the Grand Ducal Family of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in a forested area above Munich, now part of Bad Berka. It was named after the recently deceased Grand Duchess Sophie of Orange-Nassau. Initially, the house served as a spa facility for the treatment of tuberculosis patients. By 1911, the number of beds had increased to 200. From 1924, the transformation of the spa into a clinical facility began, in order to implement new treatment methods and corresponding surgical interventions for lung patients. For this purpose, new treatment rooms were created, laboratories were established, and X-ray machines were purchased.
