The central octagonal building of Aachen Cathedral, also known as the Octagon, is the oldest part of the cathedral and its architectural and symbolic heart. This remarkable structure was commissioned at the end of the 8th century by Emperor Charlemagne, who had it converted into his Palatine Chapel. Construction began around 790 and was completed around 800.
Some notable features:
The octagonal part is inspired by Byzantine and Roman examples, especially by the San Vitale in Ravenna.
Centrally in the octagon hangs the famous Barbarossa chandelier, a gift from the 12th century.
Here is also the throne of Charlemagne, where German kings were crowned for centuries.
The octagonal shape, as explained earlier, symbolizes rebirth, resurrection and eternal life.
The building is richly decorated with mosaics and marble pillars, some of which come from Roman buildings.
The octagon gives Aachen Cathedral its unique architectural profile and is one of the best-preserved Carolingian buildings in Europe. It is one of the most important monuments in Western Europe, both religiously and historically.
