The name "Up den Braem" refers to the sandy soil typical of the western Münsterland, where gorse (in Low German "Braem") grows; to the east of Gescher, starting at Klye, there is the clay soil "Up den Dreyn".
The buildings originate from the surrounding area of Gescher. They were disassembled on-site by the local heritage association and rebuilt on the 3.5-hectare garden area of the old town hall.
