The Berkelsee is approximately 6.4 hectares in size and up to 8 meters deep. It was created in the 1980s for sand extraction and has since been a club water for ASV Vreden. Its fish stock can be described as extremely good. Various fish species such as carp, tench, bream, rudd, crucian carp, as well as pike, zander, and perch are native here.
The Berkelsee was for a long time a concern for the fishing club. During the summer months, there was an increase in algal blooms, resulting in a loss of oxygen in the lower water layers. The lake was practically dead at depth. The installation of a monk system, which drains the oxygen-free deep water, has remedied this issue, allowing the lake to stabilize again.
Please also note the regulatory ordinance regarding the use of common rights at Berkelsee in Vreden.
There are two bird protection zones at Berkelsee that must not be entered.
