The Darrieus rotor is a wind turbine for wind power plants with a vertical rotational axis (VAWT, vertical axis wind turbine). Unlike historical models such as the Chinese windmill (folding blade rotor), it is a high-speed runner. The rotor was invented by the Frenchman Georges Jean Marie Darrieus. In the original French patent document from 1925, his name is not mentioned[1]. This is only the case in the American one from 1931.[2] In its classical form, the rotor blades are attached at the upper and lower ends of the shaft and extend outward in a curved shape. Shaped according to the principle of a catenary, the centrifugal force in them causes only tensile stresses, not bending moments.
