The "Wurstaufholen" was commonly practiced, a so-called begging custom. The process was similar everywhere: unmarried young men dressed up and went from house to house singing a begging song and playing pranks. They received Mettwürste or other gifts and consumed these at a communal meal. Prof. Sauermann writes about a tradition in Borkenwirthe: " ...The jackets and trousers were probably put on inside out, straw wands stuffed into the wooden shoes. With a handkerchief around their necks, with a half-long pipe in their mouths, the boys went from one house to another through the neighborhood." Those who understood a bit about music played Carnival songs along the way and in the houses.
One can clearly see the parallels to today's "Heeker Schlöffken": Sneese, stock over the shoulder, Mettwurst, straw wands in the wooden shoes, handkerchief around the neck.
