Berkel route from Billerbeck to Zutphen NL

The Berkel Route runs through untouched regions and often takes you back in time. The Berkel springs from Billerbeck, at the foot of the Baumberge. It flows through Coesfeld, Gescher, Stadtlohn, and Vreden before it reaches the Netherlands. Via Eibergen, Borculo, Lochem, and Almen, it empties into the IJssel at Zutphen.

Well worth a stop is the Zwillbrocker Venn nature reserve with its flamingo colony. Interested in cultural history? Then head to the bell town of Gescher, the pottery town of Stadtlohn, or the Hamaland Museum in Vreden. One municipality was even named after the Berkel: Berkelland. Here, village churches, watermills, and other historical buildings invite you to visit. The museum landscape also offers real rarities, such as the fire brigade or crystal museum in Borculo.
